Below are examples of the paint recipes that Susan “Swooz” Hudson used in our circa 1911 Guest House and Event Venue, The Stone House at Black Dog Salvage.

The Stone House at Black Dog Salvage - Master Bath
Master Bathroom Walls and Cabinetry:
The walls of the bathroom are lined with circa 1940’s tongue and groove knotty pine paneling salvaged from the Former United Methodist Church in Laurel, DE (in Season 8 of Salvage Dawgs) and installed horizontally. Before installing, the paneling was run through a planer to remove the amber shellac and expose the grain and knots of the wood. The amber color of the shellac remained in the groves and cove of the detailing. Once installed two coats of Black Dog Salvage Paint color “611 Steam” were applied, diluted 50% with distilled water. We used a “wash” versus paint so that the knots and the graining of the wood would be exposed. The paneling was then top coated with Guard Dog Furniture Paint protector in a Matte sheen.

The Stone House at Black Dog Salvage - Media Room
Media Room:
The walls of the Media Room are lined with rough pine and oak boards that were lightly planed. We wanted to retain the texture of the weathered wood along with some of the original paint. The boards were salvaged from various jobs. Once installed the boards were “scrub washed” with a wash of “Silver Labrador”, one of the recipes you can create with Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint. The paint was diluted 50% with distilled water and literally scrubbed into the porous wood with a natural bristle brush. All were sealed with Guard Dog in Matte.

The Stone House at Black Dog Salvage - Kitchen
Kitchen Cupboards:
The kitchen cupboards were fabricated from rough cut Western Cedar salvaged from the Robert Byrd Story Book House of Winston Salem, NC, episode 708 of Salvage Dawgs. The original finish was enhanced with a dry brush technique in order to accentuate the saw marks and texture of the wood. The color “Silver Labrador”, was diluted by 1/3 using distilled water. All cabinets were sealed with Guard Dog in Matte.

Pine Door Headboard:
The headboard in the front guest bedroom was created from two seven-panel doors. The doors had a very dark, aged topcoat that was sanded through to expose the grain of the wood. Two coats of the color recipe Weimaraner in a wash (50% paint/50% distilled water) was applied and rubbed into the wood. Once dry the finish was lightly distressed and then top coated in Guard Dog Satin.

3 parts Galvanized
2 parts Dog Bone
1 part Black Dog
Persimmon Cupboard (SOLD):
The Persimmon Cupboard in the front guest bedroom was given a facelift after being retired from the selling floor of Black Dog Salvage as a coffee cupboard. The interior was painted with two coats of Clean Canvas and the exterior received two coats of Persimmon, a beautiful coral color. The piece was top coated in Guard Dog Matte.
