Mix It Up!

It’s Turkey Time!

Family, Food, and FUN…that’s Thanksgiving at my house!

Growing up, Thanksgiving was always celebrated at the family farm in Michigan. The house was always filled with family like my Auntie Bets, Uncle Jack, their children, my beloved Papa and Yoo-hoo, and my parents & siblings. So much laugher and constant ruckus from the nine children running in and out of the house. How the adults held it together and stayed sane with all of the “activity” mystifies me today!

All of those great memories were on my mind as I started mixing it up in the paint studio creating the November palette. For some reason, this month I was suffering from “Painter’s Block” and felt the need to reach back into those memories of “Thanksgivings Past”….and that’s when these gorgeous, new colors finally started to surface.

My Uncle Jack always brought a bottle of Mateus red wine to the Thanksgiving table. The rich, flavorful color Burgundy reminds me of the wine he so delicately served the adults… (who I am sure needed more than one bottle)! I achieved this color by mixing 1 part Appalachian Sunset with 1 part I Need a Bandage, plus 1 part Dirt. This recipe creates an earthy red with a hint of strawberry and chocolate.

Oregano was a surprise! I looked at my color wheel in the paint studio and decided to take a walk on the wild side and mix two colors that I would never consider combining: Caution Dogs at Work and Blue Ridge….basically true blue and orange. The result was a beautiful “sagey” green, the color of fresh Oregano!  The recipe is two parts Caution plus one-part Blue Ridge.

Deep Teal is the color of my favorite childhood winter sweater. I wore that thing till the sleeves ended at my elbows and it bore more holes than yarn. This gorgeous color is two parts Keep it Teal, plus one part Dirt.

There’s no Thanksgiving without Pumpkin Pie! This recipe gave my color-oriented brain quite a workout. Just when I thought I had it right, I realized it was too yellow and needed more “cinnamon.” I am happy to tell you I finally got it tweaked to perfection, so much so I could taste it! I went home and mixed up a real pie much to my family’s enjoyment!

The recipe for Pumpkin Pie is 2 parts Caution plus one part I Need a Bandage, and one part Dirt.

The two premixed colors highlighted this month are Baby I’m Amaized and Dirt.

Baby I’m Amaized is a beautiful, rich corn color….and you can’t have Thanksgiving without corn, either! Corn pudding, corn bread, or dried Indian Corn decorations come to mind.

Dirt is a rich chocolatey brown, the color of deeply roasted turkey skin, cloves and cinnamon, or just plain chocolate…of which we all need at least a little during the holidays.

I am positive you will find this color palette warm, inviting, and fulfilling…..just like your Thanksgiving.
