Mix It Up!
Baby It’s Cold Outside
Happy New Year! 2024! WOW! I can still remember – I think the year was 1965 – sitting in the back seat of my parent’s station wagon and doing the math with my siblings as to how old we would all be in the year 2000. As we were barely in the double-digits age-wise at that time, the thought of being THAT OLD was mind blowing. And here we are in 2024. Time sure does fly.
As I contemplated the palette of colors for January, I decided to focus on our pure white “Clean Canvas”, which I found astutely applicable for the New Year!
Clean Canvas is a pure white. It will not “pull” yellow, blue, green, etc. It is “dead on” white. I did this on purpose. The line needed a pure white to effectively create tints of the other hues in the line.
All the colors within this palette are built on Clean Canvas and its versatility: Linen and Lace, Hot Chocolate, Ice Blue, Frosted Violet, and Sleet.
Linen and Lace was the very first color recipe I ever created. I was working on a piece down in the shop that was to be revealed on the show the next day. The paint I was using was not cooperating. I had painted the interior of the cabinet three times and three times the paint had popped off! Luckily, I got a call from shipping telling me I had received a shipment of paint. I ran upstairs and found that the plant had sent me one can of each color of our new paint to test! Immediately I pulled the cans of Clean Canvas and Dog Bone, mixed equal parts of each and created Linen and Lace, a true, soft, neutral cream. I sanded off the remnants of the other paint, wiped the piece down, laid down a layer of the new paint, and waited. The color was perfect, and the paint stayed in place! It is such a timeless and versatile hue that since that time it has become one of our most popular color recipes.
Hot Chocolate is named appropriately as it is the essence of pure milk chocolate. After a hard day of playing in the snow we would all sit at the kitchen table and warm our frozen fingers on a steamy mug of hot chocolate. This color is achieved by mixing one part of the color Dirt with one part of Clean Canvas.
When I lived in Anchorage, Alaska I was astounded that the glaciers weren’t just plain white. They had a bluish glow to them in certain areas and Ice Blue was created to duplicate that color. Mix one part of Roanoke Rain with one part of Clean Canvas create this stunningly versatile blue.
Frosted Violet is a pale lavender that is reminiscent of the color of the sky just before sunset during the winter months up North. A true mix of the blue sky and the setting sun with a mix of frozen air. Mix three parts of Clean Canvas and one part of That’s Going to Leave a Mark to create this hue.
Sleet is a pale, neutral gray that pairs well with Ice Blue, Frozen Violet and Clean Canvas. Not too dark, yet not too light. The recipe for this color is one part Galvanized plus one part Clean Canvas.
