From Jackie:
I love a good bow front anything and was so excited to acquire this pair. The only real obstacle? One of the tops is laminate. I’m not sure if it was a fix at some point or if the pair was made in different years and it was purposefully done that way. Regardless, the rest of both pieces is solid wood and beautifully made.
As always, they got a good cleaning before I started working on them. Then all of the screws were tightened (ALL of the screws were loose) and I checked for any repairs that needed to be done. The old finish was blistered and peeling on the sides, top and drawers of one nightstand so I stripped it all off and cleaned it up. There were only a few dings around the feet and a small scratch on the wood top that got some wood filler and both got a good sanding. Because the top of one nightstand is laminate, I used primer to ensure good adhesion of the paint.
I never used to distress pieces and I have to blame a couple of my clients for my new found love of a distressed piece. But I’m very intentional when I distress so it’s more of a design aspect rather than random.
This is a little trick my friend Courtney at Twig & Thyme Design showed me. You distress a piece after painting and the last thing you want to happen is to scratch your beautiful paint job. If you tape above and below the line that will be distressed, it protects the paint from being scratched by the sand paper and saves you from a lot of crying and cussing!!
The hardware for the nightstands cleaned up beautifully. There are many different methods of cleaning hardware but what I usually do is this:
-boil in plain water for 30-ish minutes
-scrub with liquid Bar Keepers Friend (I prefer the liquid to the powder because it’s easier to rinse and you don’t have white residue in the details)
-rinse well and dry thoroughly
-apply two coats of lacquer to prevent tarnish
For scrubbing, I use a sponge with a green scrubby, a stiff brush, a brass wire brush and a small, stiff bottle brush. It takes a LOT of elbow grease but the results are always stunning!!
