Big Moves on the Greenway: Black Dog Salvage and RMA Expand

Roanoke, Virginia (May 5, 2026) – Two independent Roanoke businesses are collaborating to expand their existing retail footprints and bring enhanced experiences to the Roanoke River Greenway. The commercial enhancement will coincide with adjacent recreation and transportation improvements, strengthening the corridor as a growing regional destination.

Black Dog Salvage plans to reopen its second warehouse (BDS2) to the public later this year. Located at 629 Ashlawn Street SW in Norwich, less than a mile from the Main Showroom and directly along the Roanoke River Greenway, BDS2 will house the majority of the company’s architectural salvage inventory, including antique lumber, doors, trim, mantels, and other large-scale reclaimed materials.

The Main Showroom will remain focused on custom fabrication and a distinctive mix of offerings, including specialty architectural salvage, furniture, home décor, art, gifts, and more.

“Reopening BDS2 creates a more accessible and organized experience for our customers,” said Mike Whiteside, co-founder of Black Dog Salvage. “It gives our larger architectural pieces the room they deserve and allows people to experience the scale and possibilities of reclaimed materials firsthand.”

Robert Kulp, co-founder of Black Dog salvage, added, “This expansion allows us to better serve contractors, designers, and homeowners while keeping the Main Showroom focused on distinctive pieces and custom design. It strengthens both sides of the business and enhances the overall customer experience.”

At the same time, Roanoke Mountain Adventures—known locally as “RMA”—is relocating its retail operations to the main Black Dog property, where it will expand its bike shop, outdoor gear and apparel offerings, and adventure outfitting services. The new location will maintain direct access to the Roanoke River Greenway and the region’s growing outdoor recreation network while tripling its retail floor space.  Estimated opening date Fall 2026.

“This move will enable RMA to realize its full vision as a unique outdoor retail experience that makes it fun and affordable to get outside,” said Jeff Todd, owner of Roanoke Mountain Adventures. “After ten amazing years across the river in Wasena, the iconic Black Dog warehouse represents the ideal setting for us to grow while maintaining the same special connection to our community and natural resources. We’re thrilled to partner with a company that shares our values of sustainability and service.”

“Honestly, it’s just more of what our customers already love about RMA,” said Operations Manager Charity Hall, citing “an ever-changing mix of consignment outdoor gear and apparel, fun and functional bikes and electric bikes, top-quality bike service, as well as greenway and mountain bike rentals and river outings.” Hall added that the expanded retail space will allow Roanoke Mountain Adventures to grow its offerings. “We’ll also have the space to introduce a thoughtfully curated selection of brand-new outdoor apparel, footwear, and equipment from both well-known and unexpected outdoor brands.”

Both businesses remain independently owned and operated.

Looking ahead, the neighboring skate & bike park (completed in January) and in-river kayak park (under construction) are expected to bring increased activity to the area, introducing new visitors to both businesses. Along with an expanding Dog Bowl music series and other exciting events and collaborations planned for the property, these developments greatly enhance the Greenway corridor as a visitor destination.

Together, these changes reinforce Roanoke’s culture of reuse, craftsmanship, and outdoor adventure, giving locals and visitors new reasons to explore.
